EUGENE -- The defending national champion Stanford Cardinal defeated the University of Oregon volleyball team, 30-17, 30-9, 30-21, in front to 1,245 fans at McArthur Court Saturday evening. With the loss, Oregon falls to 9-8 overall, 0-4 Pac-10 and Stanford, currently ranked fourth in the nation, improves to 12-1, 3-0.
"It wasn't anything we weren't doing," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "I thought we prepared the same way we always do, it's just that Stanford is the defending national champion and they are even better than they were a year ago. It's not what you aren't able to do, it's what they are able to do."
The Cardinal, led by Sara McGee's 10 kills and .909 hitting percentage, controlled every facet of the match, holding the advantage in kills (44-26), digs (40-26), blocks (13-4) and service aces (10-3). Oregon struggled to find its offense and Stanford went ahead early in all three games. Freshman outside hitter Dariam Acevedo led the Ducks with seven kills and five digs while senior Lindsay Closs accounted for five kills. Setter Sydney Chute and middle blocker Kelly Russell each added four kills. Russell and senior Amanda Porter had a team-high three blocks each.
Oregon takes a break from Pac-10 action Monday, hosting Portland at McArthur Court at 7 p.m.
