John McKay

The Ducks’ leading scorer with eight touchdowns and 48 points for the 1948 squad which played in the next January’s Cotton Bowl, a team many regard as one of Oregon’s greatest, was a fast, deceptive halfback. His career average of 6.1 yards per carry is still tops in the record book.
Backfield coach from 1950-58, he left Eugene for a spectacular career as head coach of national championship teams at USC. He proceeded to the NFL where he became the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. McKay was twice before associated with Oregon’s Athletic Hall of Fame, as a player on the ’48 team and coach of the 1957 Rose Bowl squad.
