Danny O'Neil
- Induction:
- 2016
- Class:
- 1995
He may not have fit the mold of the prototypical NFL quarterback yet that didn’t account for the heart and persistence of the four-year starter who led Oregon to its first Rose Bowl berth in 37 years. Danny O’Neil assumed the reigns from one of the program’s iconic quarterbacks of that era and proceeded to establish his own legacy with accomplishments most of his predecessors couldn’t match – namely the school’s first outright conference championship in 48 years. The 1994 first-team all-conference signal-caller and honorable mention All-American rallied the Ducks to six straight wins to close the regular season and was the recipient of the Rose Bowl’s co-MVP honors in the team’s unsuccessful bid against No. 2-ranked Penn State. In the process the 2003 Rose Bowl Hall-of-Fame inductee was directly responsible for five of the game’s records, with pinnacles for pass completions (41), attempts (61) and passing yards (456) remaining some 20 years later. But the impact of the Southern California native extended longer than just that one season, departing Oregon with no fewer than 13 single-season and career marks. He eclipsed the school record for passing yards in one season (3,334) as a junior, becoming only the fifth player in conference history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in one year, while his 62 career touchdowns stood fourth on the league’s all-time list at that time. He also set single-season standards for passing yards (3,224) and completion percentage (.619) along with career pass completions (636).
