Bob Newland Sr.
- Induction:
- 2013
Few individuals had a more dramatic impact on the legacy of track & field in the Willamette Valley as well as on a national scale than Bob Newland Sr., who donated countless hours of his time for the promotion of a sport that became the foundation of the athletic heritage of the University of Oregon. For 28 years, Newland served as meet director at Hayward Field that included three Olympic Trials (1972, ’74 and ’80) and five NCAA Championships, and many thought there was none better. Inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1988, he was proclaimed as the “best meet director in the United States” by one past president of the U.S. Track and Field Writers Association. The Medford native and World War II Marine veteran returned to Southern Oregon to coach Medford High School to nine state track titles in 10 years from 1948-57 before moving to Eugene as vice principal and track coach at North Eugene High School. There he honed his administrative skills while partnering with legendary Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman to lay the groundwork for the development of the All-Comers Track Meets and the Prefontaine Classic. Together they changed the way track and field was contested in the United States and the way the world would view the University of Oregon. Newland also founded and directed the Portland Indoor track meet for 10 years and served as one of the founding members of the Oregon Track Club. His extraordinary reputation and administrative prowess resulted in Newland’s appointment as assistant manager of the 1976 U.S. Men’s Olympic Team and head manager of the 1980 U.S. men’s Olympic contingent.
