If Bill Hayward created the Oregon track program, one of his star student-athletes made certain the world knew about it. Thirteen years after graduation, he returned to Oregon to make the Ducks one of the dominant teams in collegiate track and field and put Eugene on the map.
His teams won four NCAA championships from 1962-70 and he retired as the winningest coach in school history. He coached 28 Olympians and 24 NCAA individual winners. In 1972, he brought the U.S. Olympic Trials to Hayward Field, then proceeded to coach the U.S. team in Munich. His influence has stretched around the globe and his ingenuity has produced the modern running shoe and the artificial track.
