Mike Peixoto joined Services for Student Athletes as Associate Director for Learning Support in January, 2024, overseeing the third-floor learning support team in the John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes. For more than a decade, he has held a wide variety of positions from instructional to administrative on the University of Oregon Campus. In his current role, he supervises Learning Specialists, the Tutoring program, Bridge programming, and other academic programs while also working directly with athletes in their academic coursework.
Peixoto holds a doctorate in history from NYU where he specialized in the European Middle Ages and the Crusades. Following the completion of his PhD, he taught as a visiting professor at Dartmouth College, Rutgers University, The College of New Jersey, Sarah Lawrence College, and the Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon. He has published extensively on the history of the Knights Templar and has been an invited lecturer on the topic around the world.
In addition to his doctorate, Peixoto also holds a Masters in Education from Portland State University and has been involved in many projects at the University of Oregon, including SAIL, Search Advocacy, the Senate Library sub-committee on Open Access, and the Tykeson advisory committee. Immediately prior to joining the staff in SSA, he worked as an Academic Program Manager serving the departments of Economics, Sociology, and Political Science, and the General Social Science Program. Consequently, he has worked directly with students in either a teaching or advisory role since 2005.
Prior to graduate school, Peixoto completed an undergraduate degree in History and Political Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also competed as a member of the Rowing team. He still rows and competes today as a member of the masters organization, the Oregon Association of Rowers. In this capacity, he has also helped organize and run major regional rowing events such as the Covered Bridge Regatta, the PAC-12 Rowing Championships, and the Northwest Regional Masters Championships.
A native of Southern California, Peixoto has also lived in Ontario, Canada and Paris, France. He and his wife, Maile Hutterer, have two children, Matilda and Phoebe. When he’s not at work, he can be found enjoying the outdoors with family, rowing at Dexter Lake, or cheering on the Ducks.
