The Oregon men's basketball team got substantial minutes for 13 players including 11 newcomers Sunday in a win over Stanford.
EUGENE, Ore. — The results show steady progression, and the coach confirmed as much Sunday afternoon.
Oregon men's basketball won its final exhibition game of this preseason at Matthew Knight Arena, 85-57 over Stanford on Sunday. After losing to Seattle in the exhibition opener and then taking Utah to overtime on the road, the Ducks took another step forward Sunday and won comfortably.
"When you have 11 new guys, it takes some time for guys to figure out their roles, for us to figure out guys' roles, and guys playing off of one another and just getting comfortable out there on the floor," interim UO coach Tony Stubblefield said. "I think we're taking some baby steps with that in the right direction."
The Ducks, who open the regular season next Monday, Nov. 2, used 13 players Sunday. Nobody played more than 19 or fewer than eight minutes as the coaching staff got a look at various lineups together, seeking to identify rotations to be used this season.

"I think it's going to be an everyday challenge for the staff," Stubblefield said. "When you have depth like this, you have to make somewhat of a sacrifice as players. But if you get out there and play as hard as you can with the minutes that you're getting, and we can run another guy in there, I think it works itself out."
That depth got a boost Sunday with the addition of 6-foot-10 post Malique Ewin, a senior transfer who started 37 games including three in the NCAA Tournament for Arkansas last season. Ewin was held out of the first two exhibitions while awaiting clarity on his eligibility.
Ewin played 11 minutes Sunday and had 11 points with five rebounds, helping the Ducks to a 39-28 advantage on the boards.

"He's played at a high level, and Malique's got a good skill-set," Stubblefield said. "… He's been through a lot over the course of the last five or six months, of the unknown. He's been here since July, not knowing if this was going to go in his favor or not, and it's kind of hard to be motivated every day to push yourself under those circumstances. But it speaks to his character that he has stuck with it."
How It Happened: Stanford started the game hot from three-point range, and hit a trio from behind the arc in the opening minutes to take a 15-4 lead. But Oregon mounted a 26-6 run before the Cardinal hit another three, fueled by defense.
Fred Payne hit two three-pointers and then a thunderous dunk in transition during the run, two of Oregon's 19 points off turnovers in the game.
"We have got to create some points off of our defense, and that's something that we've been harping on over the course of the last month, month and a half," Stubblefield said.

After Stanford finally hit another three to get back within 30-24, the Ducks closed the first half on a 10-0 run. Five different players scored for Oregon during that run.
Stanford scored first in the second half, before the Ducks went on an 8-1 run that included six points by one of two returning players in the rotation Sunday, forward Sean Stewart. Ewin scored seven straight points for Oregon later in the half, and the UO men capped the game with three-pointers by Dwayne Aristode and returner Wei Line to finish the game with their biggest lead of the afternoon.
Notable: Prior to tipoff, a moment of silence was held to honor Pit Crew president Josh Rickey, who recently passed away. A seat in the front row of the student section at center court was left open in his memory. … Assistant coach Kevin McKenna, who retired from the UO bench over the summer, was back with the Ducks and has joined Stubblefield's staff for this season. … Ewin was cleared Friday to join the Ducks going forward.
Up Next: The Ducks open the regular season against Montana on Nov. 2 (7 p.m., Big Ten Network).
