A daily recap and preview of current and former UO athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Games.
The Day That Was …
The United States women's national team put an exclamation point on the 2024 Paris Games with their eighth straight gold medal. Oregon legend Sabrina Ionescu helped Team USA fend off host France in the gold medal game, 67-66, marking the U.S.'s 61st consecutive win at the Olympic Games.

Ionescu came off the bench to help spark a second-half comeback by the U.S., who trailed by 10 points after France broke a 25-25 halftime tie with a 10-point run to begin the third quarter. Team USA took its first lead of the second half with 2:31 to play in the third, 41-40, on an Ionescu assist to Napheesa Collier.

Ionescu finished the game with three assists and two rebounds in 10 minutes and becomes the first current or former Duck to earn an Olympic medal in 5x5 basketball. She joins incoming UO transfer Elisa Mevius (3x3, Germany) as gold-medal winners in the Paris Games.

The gold medal was the 40th for the United States as a country, tying China for the most at the Games. The U.S. finished with 126 total medals in Paris, besting second-place China who had 91 total medals.

Over six games in Paris, Ionescu averaged 5.5 points, 3.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game while shooting 42 percent from the floor (40 percent from three) in her Olympic debut.
