Ducks Lose Two at Pac-12 South Invite

Oregon faces two more top-10 teams in Cal and USC on Sunday.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Playing the top-two teams in the country, the Oregon beach volleyball team lost to top-ranked UCLA and No. 2 Stanford Saturday at the Pac-12 South Invitational.

Match 1 | #1 UCLA 5, Oregon 0

The top-ranked Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and 4 pairs. During the second wave, Bella Gamache and Natasha George pushed back by taking the first set, 21-19, against Tessa Van Winkle and Jaden Whitmarsh in the No. 3 spot. The score was tied at 14-all in the second set before UCLA went on a 7-1 run to end the frame and tie the match.

Meanwhile, the Bruins had clinched the overall dual with victories on courts five and one, respectively. Back at No. 3 pairs, Van Winkle and Whitmarsh took an early lead in the third to thwart any thoughts of an upset by Gamache and George.

Match 2 | #2 Stanford 5, Oregon 0

Oregon (1-9) fell behind early and couldn't recover with the Cardinal posting straight-set wins on all five courts. Stanford clinched with a 21-16, 21-13 result at the No. 5 spot in the lineup. The Ducks' lineup did feature a new pair in George and Valerie Peterson teaming up on court four.
