Ducks Drop Two in Pac-12 South Finale

Oregon travels to Phoenix for Monday's match against No. 7 Grand Canyon.
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon beach volleyball team lost a pair of matches Sunday on the final day of the Pac-12 South Invitational at Bear Down Beach in Tucson, Ariz. The Ducks are now 8-7 this season after a 1-3 weekend in the desert.

The 11th-ranked Bears won the opening set in each match Sunday morning and went on to secure the match with straight-set wins on courts three, four and five. Despite the deficit, Oregon was still in play to grab dual points at No. 1 and 2 pairs after forcing a third frame on each court.

Cal pushed its lead to 4-0 with a 21-18, 16-21, 15-11 win over Daley McClellan and Madelyn LaFollette on court two. In the remaining match, Reagan Hope and Brooke Nuneviller—playing in their third three setter of the weekend—saved a match point but ultimately fell 23-21, 14-21, 15-13 to the Cal duo of Ava Mann and Ainsley Radell.

Ashley Schroeder and Ella Tyus secured the Ducks' first point of the afternoon with a 21-12, 21-18 win on court four over the Utes' team of Sommer Daniel and Lauren Sayre. The victory marked the pair's second of the weekend and sixth of the year.

At the top spot, Hope and Nuneviller battled through a tight opening set and then cruised in the second for a 23-21, 21-11 win over Amaya Messier and Sage Patchell. The Ducks' No. 1 pair had lost three close three setters in the three Pac-12 South matches prior to getting the win and giving Oregon a 2-0 lead in the dual.

Utah got on the scoreboard with a straight-set win on court five. The Ducks were up 2-1 with the final two matches on court in third sets.

At No. 3 pairs, each team had numerous chances to claim a point. The Ducks' Alex Laita and Bea Wetton saved two match points before arriving at 15-all against Utah's Marissa Koch and Samantha Leight. The Ducks then had three match points of their own with the final opportunity to clinch coming with an 18-17 lead. The Utes finally cashed in on their fifth match point to even the match at 2-2.

On court two, McClellan and LaFollette trailed 13-10 but pulled to within one—down 13-12—after an ace off the tape by LaFollette. However, Utah's Grace Andrews and Bella Vezzani rattled off the next two points to win the match and secure the dual.
