Ducks Win First-Ever Season Opener, Split Opening Day Matches

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Oregon opened its season with a 4-1 win over Santa Clara before dropping its second match of the day to San Jose State, 4-1, on the opening day of the beach season Friday at the Spartan Beach Courts.

How it Happened: The Ducks won at the two through five spots in their opening match against Santa Clara, with three pairs taking three-set thrillers. Freshmen Jade Sadeiko and Bea Wetton won, 21-10, 19-21, 15-13 at the No. 2 spot, and Ally Haden and Savannah Siegrist came back after dropping the first set for a 18-21, 21-14, 15-6 victory. Elise Ferreira and Mia Lopez dug out of a hole after dropping their opening set, winning 21-23, 21-16, 15-9, while Zoe Almanza and Anastasia Lima secured the only sweep for the Ducks, 21-14, 21-18.

Haden and Siegrist picked up Oregon's only win in the second match of the day, against San Jose State, taking another three-setter, 21-16, 15-21, 15-11. The Ducks lost a number of close matches, with three of them going three sets.
