EUGENE, Ore. – Despite taking the doubles point, the Oregon men's tennis team saw its four-game win streak come to an end Friday evening, as it dropped a 4-1 decision to Pac-12 foe Arizona State at the Student Tennis Center.
How It Happened: Oregon jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in doubles play. Sophomore Ty Gentry and senior Simon Stevens made quick work of ASU's Andrea Bolla and Baonoromandresy, who entered the match ranked as the No. 86 doubles tandem. Gentry and Steven's convincing 6-2 win set the tone for the Ducks in doubles action recording their fourth consecutive victory to improve their record to 20-6 on the year.
The clinching victory came at the top spot where Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent put together a 6-4 win. The nation's No. 31 ranked doubles team, Clissold and Laurent have now won five straight and are 3-1 in Pac-12 action.
The Sun Devils quickly took a 3-1 lead thanks to three straight-set singles wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Clissold and Gentry both took the first set of their respective matches, but were forced into a third set, while freshman Riki Oshima forced a third set with a 6-3 win in his second set at the No. 6 spot. Clissold jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the third set but gave up four straight points to fall behind 2-5. Despite being down to match point three times, Clissold was able to break serve for the next point before falling 3-6.
Gentry led his match at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-7(6), 2-1 when the match-clinching point was scored by Arizona State, while Oshima was tied 4-4 in the third.
Up Next: The Ducks will close out their home schedule on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Arizona. It will also be senior day for Oregon's three seniors, as the Ducks will honor Cormac Clissold, Simon Stevens and Akihiro Tanaka following the conclusion of doubles play.
