Beach Season Wraps at Pac-12 Championship

STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon beach volleyball team's 2018 season came to an end Thursday in the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.
The ninth-seeded Ducks (2-10) fell to No. 8 seed Utah, 4-1, in the opening match of the double-elimination tournament before dropping their second match of the day, 5-0, to No. 7 seed Arizona State in the Contenders Bracket.
How it Happened: Oregon started well against Utah on the No. 4 and No. 5 courts, winning the first set on both. After Utah forced a third set at both spots, the Ducks' No. 5 pair of Marine Hall-Poirier and Kyra Hanawahine pulled out a 15-10 win in the final set to give Oregon a 1-0 lead.
Maggie Scott and Ronika Stone, who won their first set 21-18 after initially trailing 10-4, went back and forth in a tight third set at No. 4, but Utah came out with the win in extra points, 18-16, to even up the match.
Utah took a 2-1 lead with a straight-set win at the No. 2 court. August Raskie and Lindsey Vander Weide won the opening set at the top court, 21-19, but Utah bounced back to win the next two sets and clinch the match. The Utes won at the No. 3 spot, 21-15, 23-21, to finish off their 4-1 victory.
The Ducks struggled to get things going against the Sun Devils in an elimination match after moving to the Contenders Bracket. ASU swept the match in straight sets to survive elimination and end Oregon's stay at the Pac-12 Championship.
What it Means: The two losses bring the end of Oregon's 2018 beach season, the fifth for the program since beach volleyball was added. The Ducks will now turn their attention back to the hardwood as they prepare for the start of the 2018 indoor volleyball season.
