Ducks Fall At No. 4 Stanford
04/20/18 | Men's Tennis
STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon men's tennis team could not chop down the No. 4 Cardinal, falling to Stanford 4-1 Friday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
How it Happened: The Ducks (15-8, 3-4) pushed the Cardinal to the edge in doubles play, despite Stanford having two top 50 doubles pairs.
Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry had the toughest draw taking on the No. 24 pair of Tom Fawcett and Axel Geller, eventually falling to the Cardinal duo, 6-3.
With Stanford needing only one more win to clinch the opening point, the remaining two courts went into duplicate 5-5 ties.
Pairing together for the first time in nearly a month, junior Armando Soemarno and freshman Charles Roberts fell behind 6-5 at the No. 3 spot, but left the match abandoned as Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent fell to the No. 50 duo of Sameer Kumar and Michael Genender, 7-5.
Up 1-0, Stanford extended its lead in singles play recording a win at the No. 2 spot as No. 70 Geller defeated Akihiro Tanaka, 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Riki Oshima fell in straight sets as well at the No. 5 spot, 6-0, 6-2, putting UO on the brink of a shutout loss, down 3-0.
Gentry prevented the sweep, recording his first career victory at the No. 3 position. His 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 90 Kumar also marked his first career singles win over a ranked opponent.
The Ducks attempted to gain ground on the Cardinal with Laurent and junior Ethan Young-Smith, playing in only his fourth singles match of the spring, fighting to force a third set at the No. 1 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
Neither Duck would get the opportunity to finish their respective second sets, though, as Eric Fomba defeated Clissold, 7-6(1), 6-2, at the No. 4 spot to secure the match decision.
Notable: With his win today, Gentry has now tied Laurent with a team-high 23 singles wins this year, going 14-2 during the spring.
Up Next: The Ducks close out the regular season at Cal Saturday at 1 p.m.
