The Golden Bears managed to survive a battle of wills against the Oregon men's tennis team, in a match that saw five of the six singles matches decided by third set tiebreakers.
BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 19 California just barely outlasted the Oregon men's tennis team, 4-3, Monday morning in a marathon battle in the ITA Kick-Off consolation championship.
The Golden Bears managed to survive the battle of wills in a match that saw five of the six singles matches decided by third set tiebreakers.
How it Happened: The Ducks (3-2) were able to secure an early lead over their Pac-12 rivals winning two of the three doubles matches to secure the point.
The pairs of Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts along with Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry recorded duplicate 6-4 wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, to give UO a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Bears tied the match, 1-1, following Paul Barretto's win over Riki Oshima, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot, marking the only two-set singles win in the match.
Both teams then proceeded to trade points as each remaining match went into a tiebreaker third set.
After winning his opening set, Thomas Laurent fell to Billy Griffith, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, to give Cal a 2-1 lead. Gentry pulled the Ducks even, 2-2, with a three-set decision at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, over Bjorn Hoffman.
Stevens rallied to force a third set at the No. 2 position, but could not pull off the comeback falling, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, to J.T. Nishimura to put Cal in front once again 3-2.
Senior Cormac Clissold tied it up for a third time winning a marathon match against Jacob Brumm at the No. 5 spot, 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(4).
With the match deadlocked at 3-3, it all came down to senior Akihiro Tanaka at the No. 3 spot. Tanaka managed to fend off Jack Molloy, 7-5, in the second set to send the match into a tiebreaker set. The Japanese international nearly sent the final set into extra games, but Molloy was able to rally defeating Tanaka, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, to clinch the win for Cal.
Notable: Despite losing their last two matches, the Ducks have not gone down without a fight sending eight singles matches into tiebreaker third sets over the past two days … With their win today, the doubles pair of Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry now have a team-high 12-1 doubles record … Their win today marked their ninth straight doubles victory dating back to the fall season.
Up Next: The Ducks return home this Sunday, Feb. 4, to face Pepperdine at 1 p.m. PT.
