ATHENS, Ga. - Thomas Laurent saw his tremendous sophomore season come to an end on Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships, falling to No. 1 overall seed Mikael Torpeguard of Ohio State, 7-5, 6-2.
"Thomas had a lot of chances, especially in the first set when he was serving for it," said head coach Nils Schyllander. "But all in all, it was a great experience and something to build on for the future. Thomas should be incredibly proud of his season. He has been amazing all year."
The native of Montpellier, France, closes the 2016-17 season with a 30-7 record in singles, shattering the program's previous single-season wins record. He was also 20-4 in dual matches for the Ducks, playing every match at the No. 1 spot. He broke another program record earlier in the season, winning 18 straight matches between the fall and the spring.
Laurent became the first Duck to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships since Sven Swinnen in 2005, and he was the eighth Duck all-time to qualify.
Through just two collegiate seasons, Laurent has already amassed a singles record of 49-13, including a 24-4 mark at No. 1 singles. He is only three wins shy of cracking the all-time UO top-15 list for career wins.
