OREGON CLAIMED ITS SECOND WIN OVER SACRAMENTO STATE IN AS MANY WEEKS ON THURSDAY WITH A 3-2 VICTORY
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - The Oregon beach volleyball team opened a stretch of five matches in three days on Thursday with a 3-2 win over Sacramento State at Livermore Community Park.
How it Happened: After taking down Sacramento State (4-8), 3-2, last weekend in Boise, the Ducks (2-3) were able to fight back from an early deficit on Thursday to claim the win. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead to start the match as Hannah Meadows and Lana Brown defeated Oregon's Laurent Page and Marine Hall-Poirier in two sets, 21-15, 21-17, at the No. 4 spot.
The Ducks got on the board and evened the score with a win at the No. 5 spot, as Maggie Scott and Ronika Stone improved to 3-0 together so far this season with a 21-18, 11-21, 16-14 victory over Courtney Dietrich and Brigitte Murdock. Oregon pulled ahead, 2-1, with a straight-set win on the third court. Maddy Silberger-Franek and Willow Johnson teamed up to take down Kennedy Kurtz and Sarah Davis, 21-12, 21-16, to put the Ducks ahead.
The Hornets evened the match once again, 2-2, as Brie Gathright and Lexie Skalbeck defeated the Oregon duo of Taylor Agost and August Raskie, 21-15, 25-23, at the No. 2 spot.
With the match on the line, it all came down to the top court. The Ducks' Brooke Van Sickle and Lindsey Vander Weide dropped the first set to Morgan Stanley and Madeline Cannon, 14-21, but bounced back from there. Van Sickle and Vander Weide took the next two sets, 21-15, 15-11, and secured the second victory for the Ducks over the Hornets in as many weeks.
What it Means: Oregon has now won two of its last three matches and will play four over the course of the next two days in Stanford, Calif.
Up Next: The Ducks will head to Stanford, where they will face off with the Cardinal (3 p.m.) and Boise State (5 p.m.) tomorrow before playing Washington and California on Saturday.
