SEATTLE -- The Oregon men's tennis team established momentum early and carried it through to the end, winning 4-2 over No. 35 Washington Saturday night at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks (17-6, 3-4) clinched the doubles behind wins at the top two spots. Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens collected their 21st win of the season as they won 6-4 over Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer on court two. The Huskies (16-8, 3-4) led on the other two courts but Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno came back in the top spot to clinch the point in Oregon's favor. After sitting in a 5-4 deficit to Piers Foley and Wendell Wantanabe, the 30th-ranked Duck pair won three straight games to take the match 7-5.
In singles, Amos quickly put UO up 2-0 in the match as he dispatched Jake Douglas 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Amos now has 25 singles wins on the season, putting him in sole possession of the second-best season ever in Oregon tennis history.
The Huskies then were able to get on the board behind a straight set win on court 1, but shortly after, Thomas Laurent put the Ducks up 3-1 as he won 6-4, 6-4 over Gal Hakek at No. 3.
The remaining three matches all went into a deciding third set and UW was able to take the match on court No. 5 to score its second point of the match.
At No. 6, Ethan Young-Smith dropped the first set 6-1 to Kawika Lam before coming back to take the second set 6-4. In the third set, the two were locked in a battle. After being down 5-4, Young-Smith tied it up at 5-all and then again at 6-all to force the breaker. There, the freshman established his dominance, winning 7-2 to clinch the match.
UP NEXT: The Ducks will head to Ojai, Calif. to participate in the Pac-12 Championships. Play begins Wednesday at Libbey Park.
