EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 53 ranked University of Oregon men's tennis team moved to 11-1 with a 7-0 rout of Weber State Saturday (Mar. 10) at the Student Tennis Center.
"It's been a very successful home stand and we need to find a way to bring the same energy on the road where we'll face a little more adversity," remarked head coach Nils Schyllander. "We're looking forward to going out on the road and seeing what we're made of."
Oregon was fueled by a sweep of the doubles headlined by the No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Jeff Mullen and sophomore Robin Cambier. Mullen/Cambier teamed for their 11th victory of the spring, defeating Weber State's Simon Unger and Oliver Good, 8-2. The win moved the combo of Mullen and Cambier to 20-1 for the 2011-12 season; a new school record. The record for doubles wins in a season had previously been held by Mike Goldstein and John DeVorss in the 1994-95 season when they went 19-6.
"For them to break the single season record in early March is extremely impressive," said coach Schyllander. "They've been really solid all year and very efficient. If they can keep their focus for the rest of the year it will be a very special year for them."
In singles, it was Cambier who got the scoring going while extending his spring record to 12-0 by defeating the Wildcats' Peter Ramstromer Pello, 6-0, 6-1. Elsewhere, junior Aaron Clissold replaced senior Jose Izquierdo at No. 5 singles and took down Caio Poitena, 6-2, 6-0. Across the board, Oregon's six singles victories all came in the minimum two sets.
The Ducks will travel to Pebble Beach, Calif. to square off with the University of San Francisco on Friday (Mar. 16) before continuing south to Fresno, Calif. to take on Fresno State University on Sunday (Mar. 18). A previously scheduled match against New Mexico has been cancelled.
