SEATTLE - The often lively Ducky-Husky softball rivalry lived up to its reputation as both teams rallied late before No. 6 Washington (26-2, 1-0) came away with a 3-2 win over the No. 14 University of Oregon (28-5, 0-1) Saturday in the two teams' conference opener.
After UW staked a 1-0 lead through the fifth inning thanks a first-inning RBI single by Niki Williams, neither team scored again until the sixth inning.
No-hit and without a walk the first five innings, the Duck offense came alive as sophomore Kaylan Howard and freshmen Alexa Peterson and Courtney Ceo led off with singles to load the bases with no outs. Junior pinch-hitter Christie Nieto followed with a lined single to left field to knock in UO's first run, and sophomore Samantha Pappas added a 3-2 walk to force in the next run.
Junior Kelsey Chambers followed with a deep drive to center field that was caught on the run, and appeared to score pinch-runner Allie Burger from third base, but the third-base umpire called her out for leaving early for the final out of the inning.
UW wasted little time answering in the bottom half of the inning when a hit by pitch and single to left field by Shawna Wright put runners on first and second base with no outs.
A slapped ball to third base was booted and allowed the tying run to score. After a walk, Marki Creger-Zier hit into a 5-2-3 double play, but another error at third base on a grouder by the next batter, scored the deciding run and forced head coach Mike White to change pitchers.
Junior reliever Brittany Rumfelt answered the call and retired her first and only hitter, Jenn Salling, on a grounder to first base.
Peterson (2-for-3) led the Ducks in hits and staked her third multi-hit game of the season. Others with siungle hits included Ceo, Nieto, Howard and senior Kaitlin Vitek .
At game's end for UW, Salling went 2-for-4, and three other UW hitters hit safely once.
Duck starter Jessica Moore (13-3) struck out six, walked six, gave up five hits, and one of her three runs was earned.
UW starter, freshman Kaitlin Ingelsby (15-1) struck out six, walked one, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
The two teams will meet for the second game of the doubleheader immediately after Saturday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium.
