No. 1 Tide Rolls Past No. 13 Ducks, 10-0
03/05/11 | Softball
ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 13 University of Oregon softball team (16-4)
split in second-day action against a pair of top-20 teams in the Citrus
Classic at the ESPN Diamondplex at the Disney / Wide World of
Sports Complex.
No. 1 Alabama (19-1) beat No. 13 Oregon by a 10-0 score
in five innings in the day's finale, while UO came back to beat No. 17
Louisiana-Lafayette, 5-2, earlier in the afternoon.
Entering the
game with a 4-0 mark against top-20 teams this year, Oregon allowed
three runs to returning Super Regional advancer Alabama in each of the first,
second and third innings, and another in the fourth.
Sophomore
Jessica Moore (9-2) pitched the first 1.1 innings, struck out two,
walked three, allowed two hits, and four of her five runs allowed were
earned. The Tide scored three of those runs on a three-run homer by
freshman DP Jackie Traina to right field with one out in the first
inning.
After Moore walked two batters in the second inning,
sophomore Samantha Skillingstad relieved and pitched the next 1.2
innings.
The Spokane, Wash., native struck out three, walked one,
yielded four hits, and one of her four runs allowed was earned. The Tide
touched her for runs via a two-run triple and RBI single in the second
inning, and a three-run error on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder in
the third inning.
Senior Brittany Rumfelt pitched the last two
innings, struck out five, walked one, gave up one hit, and one unearned
run - a two-out double to left field (while another potential run was
cut down on a 7-6-2 throw to the plate on the same play).
UO's best chance to score came in the third inning when Courtney Ceo bunted for a hit for the second time, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the third baseman. She was stranded, however, by two strikeouts and a hard comebacker up the middle snabbed by pitcher Kelsi Dunne (8-1).
The returning SEC Pitcher of the Year and third-team All-American ultimately struck out seven, walked two, and allowed two hits in the shutout.
Alabama leadoff hitter Kayla Braud, a Eugene native and former Marist H.S. prep player for Duck head coach Mike White, walked three times. In her final plate appearance, however she was narrowly called out on a ground ball to third base to end her 28-game hit streak (seven shy of the school record).
Teammate Jennifer Fenton led the Tide in hits (2), while five others hit safely once.
The nation's top-ranked team finally showed its offensive potential after needing a two-run seven-inning homer to beat Fordham, 3-1, earlier Saturday. The day before, Alabama beat Notre Dame, 4-3, and lost to No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette, 1-0.
Immediately before on Saturday afternoon, UO scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette(17-2) by a 5-2 score.
Moore struck out six in the complete game, and walked one. At the plate for UO, senior Kaitlin
Vitek hit a homer and double, and freshman Alexa Peterson stroked a
single for the game-winning RBI.
Looking ahead, the Ducks return
to action against two more NCAA tournament returnees Sunday in final-day
tournament action and face Illinois at 6 a.m. and Illinois State at
8:30 a.m. Pacific Time (9/11:30 a.m. Eastern Time (local)).
