Ducks Sweep Again, Beat Bulldogs 7-0
01/26/07 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. -- Youth is definitely proving an asset for the Ducks in the early season, as the singles side of four freshman, one sophomore, and one senior swept the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 7-0, Friday night at the Student Tennis Center.
Playing at the one position for the first time in his career, Marco Verdasco played the most entertaining and tight match of the night as he defeated Bryce Cooper, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).
Francisco Gallardo was the only other Duck to be tested, rallying from a second set loss to win the super tie-breaker, 1-8 and take the match 6-2, 4-6 (8)
Freshman transfer Ric Motera once again led the charge for the Ducks, finishing off Roman Dojcak in easy fashion, 6-0, 6-2. The Portland, Oregon native once again dazzled in expedient fashion, completing his match in under an hour.
Mike Myrhed, one of two returners in the singles lineup on the evening, picked off the next member of the Bulldogs in convincing fashion as well, dispensing with Marco Antonio Pineda, 6-1, 6-2.
The other experienced Duck, Eric Pickard, was the next off the court, defeating Zach Radetzky, 6-0, 6-4.
Belgian newcomer Alexander Cornelissen rolled along comfortably as well, beating Brett Womack 6-0, 6-2.
The Ducks also swept the doubles point as Gallardo and Myrhed won the most tightly contested match against Adams and Pineda in a tiebreak, 8-7 (4).
The Ducks host a doubleheader tomorrow, taking on the Nevada Wolf Pack at 10 a.m. and the Idaho Vandals at 6 p.m.
