Morris and Jenkins' Offense Not Enough To Lift Ducks Past Top-Ranked Bruins

LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? Sophomore catcher Amie Morris went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins went 3-for-4, but the top-ranked Bruins' offense proved to be too much for the Ducks as UCLA defeated the University of Oregon softball team 9-3 at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif., Saturday afternoon.
Jenkins and Morris combined for five of Oregon's nine hits while junior Ann Marie Topps accounted for Oregon's other RBI. Duck sophomore Alicia Cook (3-5) took the loss for Oregon while UCLA starter Lisa Dodd improved to 15-1 overall with the win.
The Bruin offense got going in the first inning after back to back doubles by Andrea Duran and Caitlin Benyi put UCLA (35-4 overall, 7-2 Pac-10) ahead 1-0 with no outs. Catcher Emily Zaplatosch then bunted successfully to score Krista Colburn and make it 2-0. Shortstop Jodie Legaspi continued the rally with an RBI single to score Benyi and right fielder Whitney Holum made it 4-0 with an RBI double to left center field. UCLA added a fifth run in the inning when center fielder Tara Henry hit a line drive RBI to score Legaspi. Holum then scored from third on a wild pitch to extend the Bruins' lead to 6-0 after one inning of play.
Oregon (19-15, 1-5) got on the board in the fourth inning after Dodd walked Oregon senior Dani Baird to leadoff the inning. Junior Kayleen Hudson then doubled to left center to put two runners on with just one out. Topps drove in Barid with a hard hit single to left field and Morris singled to center field to score Topps and make it 6-2.
UCLA got the runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a one out, two-run home run by Legaspi that made it 8-2 Bruins. Benyi added her second RBI of the game in the fifth inning, scoring Henry with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 9-2 UCLA.
Oregon continued to chip away in seventh, scoring a run on an infield single by Courtney Shlee combined with a UCLA error to make it 9-3. Dodd then hit third baseman Joanna Gail to load the bases with two outs, but forced a line out to end the game.
The Ducks and the Bruins will meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles.
