Rice Shines In 5-0 Shutout Over No. 25 Fresno State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Freshman pitcher Melissa Rice (4-2) pitched her first collegiate complete game shutout, leading the 23rd-ranked University of Oregon softball team to a 5-0 win over No. 25 Fresno State at the Aztec Classic in San Diego, Calif. , Saturday evening. With the win, Oregon improves to 12-8 overall while the Bulldogs fall to 10-9.
Rice won her second game of the day after earlier leading the Ducks to a win over Cal State Northridge. The freshman from Colville, Wash., got help from sophomore third baseman Joanna Gail, who hit her second home run of the season and junior right fielder Kayleen Hudson who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Oregon senior Breanne Sabol reached on a throwing error by Fresno State catcher Nichole Willis in the fourth inning and eventually scored on an RBI single by Hudson to give Oregon the first lead of the game 1-0. Junior Kristi Leiter made it 2-0 with a single to left field that scored senior Beth Boskovich.
Gail's two-run home run in the sixth scored Leiter to extend the Ducks' lead to 4-0. Sabol tripled to lead off the seventh and Boskovich drove her in with an RBI double to left field to make it 5-0.
Oregon completes tournament play tomorrow vs. host San Diego State at 11:30 a.m.
