Boskovich Homers Lead Ducks To First-Ever Sweep Of UCLA
05/12/05 | Softball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? Junior Beth Boskovich hit two home runs and pitcher Amy Harris pitched her eighth complete game shutout of the season to lead the Ducks to a 3-0 win over the 12th-ranked Bruins at Easton Stadium Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles, Calif. For the first time in school history, Oregon has swept the Bruins after winning two against the defending national champions in Eugene earlier this season. With the win, the Ducks improve to 33-22 overall, 6-13 Pacific-10 Conference while UCLA falls to 8-16, 9-10 Pac-10.
"We finally put it all together today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "Amy [Harris] pitched another tremendous game for us and today we were able to get very timely hitting and score runs to help her to the victory. I am very pleased with our play today."
Harris scattered five hits over seven innings and had seven strikeouts to improve to 16-13 this season. UCLA sophomore Lisa Dodd fell to 9-6 with the loss.
Oregon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after freshman Lovena Chaput led off the game with a long single to right field. Junior Beth Boskovich then hit a one-out home run to score Chaput and give the Ducks the first advantage of the game. Boskovich hit her second home run of the game in the third inning to extend the Ducks' lead to 3-0. Boskovich now has eight home runs on the season and 19 in her career, tying her for ninth all-time at Oregon.
UCLA threatened in the second inning after a single each by Krista Colburn and Ashley Herrera followed by an Oregon error loaded the bases with two outs. Harris fought off center fielder Tara Henry and recorded the strikeout to end the inning and prevent the Bruins from getting on the board. UCLA loaded the bases with two outs again in the third and again Harris ended the inning with a strikeout, this time sitting down Lisa Dodd.
Harris and the Oregon defense shut down UCLA the rest of the way, allowing just one more base runner in the game. The Ducks now head to Seattle to face Washington Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
