Kontra, Harris And The Ducks Shutout BYU
03/26/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? The University of Oregon softball team won its seventh consecutive game Saturday afternoon, sweeping BYU in a non-conference doubleheader at Howe Field. It was another impressive day for the Ducks both offensively and defensively as senior pitcher Lindsey Kontra shutout the Cougars in game one, 8-0, before junior starter Amy Harris shut them out in the second game, 4-0.
In the first game, Oregon used 11 hits to win in five innings while Kontra gave up just three hits and walked just two. Harris (10-4) dominated in the nightcap, striking out seven batters and allowing just three hits. Offensively, freshman Lovena Chaput finished the two games 4-for-8 (.500) with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Fellow freshman T.J. Eadus was also impressive, finishing the day 2-for-3 with two walks, a home run and a 1.667 slugging percentage.
"We are starting to hit our stride and play to our potential," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We needed to start tightening things up on both sides of the ball with Pac-10 starting and I'm very pleased with our weekend."
Oregon's offense got going early in the first game as the Ducks used four first-inning hits to take a 2-0 lead. Suzie Barnes started the rally with an infield single and junior Beth Boskovich drove her in with a double to center field. Boskovich scored the Ducks' second run of the inning on an RBI line drive by designated player Ann Marie Topps.
Chaput made it 3-0 in the second inning, driving in Erin Goodell with a single through the left side and sophomore Kayleen Hudson extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning with an RBI single that scored pinch runner Kristi Jorgensen.
The Ducks scored five runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 8-0 and end the game due to the mercy rule. Offensively, nine different Oregon players had a hit led by Chaput (2-for-4) and shortstop Breanne Sabol (2-for-2).
In the second game, Oregon went ahead early again, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when BYU starter Daniela Urincho (6-2) walked catcher Ashley Richards with the bases loaded to score Barnes. Chaput hit her third home run of the season in the second inning to give the Ducks a 2-0 advantage and drove in Goodell with an RBI single in the fourth inning to put the Ducks ahead 3-0. A solo home run by T.J. Eadus in the fifth inning extended the lead to 4-0 as Harris got her fourth shutout of the season.
Pac-10 play begins next week with the Ducks hosting Washington at 3 p.m. Friday and UCLA Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m..)
