Cook Shines In First Appearance At Howe Field
02/20/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? The 13th-ranked University of Oregon softball team (6-3) split a doubleheader with in-state foe Portland State (2-4) Sunday afternoon before 232 fans at Howe Field. Oregon won game one, 2-1, before the Vikings secured the split with a 6-5 victory in the second game.
Freshman pitcher Alicia Cook struck out 12 batters in the first game ? the third-best single-game strikeout performance in school history ? to improve to 3-1 on the season. Cook allowed just three hits and walked none.
"We were fired up to play at home and I thought Alicia [Cook] did a tremendous job in her first home outing," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We would have liked to have won both games, but it was nice to be at Howe Field in February."
Portland State pitcher Mandy Hill helped her cause in the first inning, doubling to left center field to score Kimi Daniel and put the Vikings ahead 1-0. Oregon used a pair of back to back doubles ? one each by freshman Lovena Chaput and junior Breanne Sabol ? in the third inning to tie the game, 1-1. Junior Beth Boskovich drove in the wining run in the fifth inning, scoring Suzie Barnes with a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the second game, the Ducks took the early lead after an RBI single Erin Goodell that scored Dani Baird. Barnes continued to showcase her offensive power, hitting a triple off the left field fence to score Goodell and put the Ducks up 2-0 after two innings.
Portland State tied the game in the fourth inning after a two-run home run by third baseman Kayla Lewis, but Barnes hit her fourth career home run in the bottom of the inning to put Oregon ahead, 4-2. Barnes has hit a home run in four of the Ducks' last six games and is currently hitting .375 with a 1.042 slugging percentage.
The Vikings responded in the fifth inning, taking a 5-4 lead on a three-run home run by Alayna Petersen. In the bottom of the inning, Boskovich scored an unearned run after a passed ball and a throwing error by Portland State catcher Rose Rutledge to tie the game again, 5-5.
Portland State scored the winning run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Kimi Daniel that scored Whitney Olsen, who led off the inning with a double to left field.
Oregon travels to Columbus, Ga., for the NFCA Classic this week. The Ducks open the tournament vs. Creighton Friday at 11:30 a.m. PST.
