Softball Advances In Winners Bracket With 1-0 Shutout Over Bethune-Cookman At NCAA Regionals

TALLAHASSE, Fla. ? The 12th-ranked University of Oregon softball team defeated No. 7 seed Bethune-Cookman, 1-0, in its opening game at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla., Thursday afternoon. With the win, Oregon ? the No. 2 seed ? improves to 39-19 overall and advances to play third-seeded South Florida Friday at 9:30 a.m. PDT.
"I'm happy that we're advancing in the winners bracket," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We're going to have to continue to improve and get better as we advance, but I think we adjusted well today." Freshman Kayleen Hudson led off the second inning with a triple to right center field and freshman Ann Marie Topps drove her in with an RBI single up the middle to give Oregon the early 1-0 lead. It was all the Ducks needed as pitcher Ani Nyhus (22-12) and the defense shutout the Wildcats the rest of the way. It was Nyhus' 10th shutout of the season as she moves to a tie for tenth all-time at Oregon. Nyhus also broke the single-season strikeout record with seven strikeouts today, improving her total to 184 in surpassing teammate Amy Harris' 180 last season. Hudson and Topps led Oregon's offense, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively. "I was excited to be here and wanted to make the most of the opportunity," Hudson said. "We have to play our best and keep winning to reach our goals and I just wanted to do the best I could." Bethune-Cookman pitcher Lauren McCoy (23-13) took the loss as the Wildcats fall to the losers bracket to face No. 6 seed Ohio State tonight at 8 p.m.
