Ducks Take Series Off Huskies For Second Straight Season
05/01/04 | Softball
EUGENE ? After putting up just two hits against No. 3 UCLA Friday, the 11th-ranked University of Oregon softball team turned its offense around Saturday, scoring 10 runs on eight hits to defeat No. 7 Washington, 10-2, in five innings at Howe Field Saturday afternoon. A crowd of 729 watched as the Ducks (35-13 overall, 9-5 Pacific-10 Conference) secured the series vs. the Huskies for the second consecutive season. Oregon has never taken the series over its Northwest rival two seasons in row as the Ducks have now won four in a row dating back to last season against Washington (33-12, 7-5) for the first time in school history.
"I am so pleased with how we responded offensively today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "Again we had excellent pitching, but we had been needing to break through on offense and I thought we did that today." After a scoreless first inning, Oregon's offense exploded with two outs in the second inning as it scored seven runs on five hits, including a three-run home run by shortstop Breanne Sabol, a two-RBI single by catcher Jenn Poore and an RBI single by sophomore Beth Boskovich. Sabol finished the day 2-for-3 with a career-high four RBI while Poore was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Dani Baird was 2-for-3 with a run scored while Ashley Richards was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Junior pitcher Ani Nyhus (20-9) struck out seven en route to picking up her 20th win of the season while Washington's Tia Bollinger (11-4) took the loss. The Ducks added to their lead in the third inning, scoring an unearned run on a Washington throwing error and adding another on Sabol's fourth RBI of the game. The Huskies finally got on the board with a solo home run by Dena Tyson and added another run on an RBI triple by Aimee Minor in the fifth. Poore's single through the middle in the bottom of the fifth inning scored second baseman Erin Goodell and ended the game to due the mercy rule.
