Top Ranked Arizona Rallies To Defeat Oregon Softball
04/24/04 | Softball
EUGENE ? A two-out rally in the fifth inning led top-ranked Arizona to a 6-1 victory over No. 12 Oregon at Howe Field in Eugene Saturday afternoon. A season-high crowd 1,016 fans watched as the Ducks (33-12 overall, 7-4) and Wildcats (45-1, 9-0) battled through four innings after a lead off home run by senior catcher Jenn Poore tied the game 1-1 in the first inning. The score remained knotted as both pitchers settled down after allowing a home run each in the first, eventually combining for 22 strikeouts in the game.
Junior pitcher Ani Nyhus (18-8) struck out 10 in the loss ? her second consecutive 10-plus strikeout performance and third in conference play. Nyhus' 10 strikeouts matched a season-high for Arizona and brought her season total to 149. Arizona's Alicia Hollowell improved to 32-0 on the season, striking out 12 in the win while walking two. "I'm disappointed for our kids," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "But, I really thought we played excellent softball today. Arizona is an exceptional ball club and I really felt like we showed we could play with them." After striking out Caitlin Lowe and Autumn Champion ? the Pac-10's leading hitters ? in the first, Nyhus gave up a solo home run to Wendy Allen as Arizona went ahead 1-0. Nyhus then struck out clean up hitter Mackenzie Vandergeest to end the inning. Poore hit her seventh home run of the season and 15th of her career, which places her tied for 10th all-time at Oregon, in the bottom of the inning to tie the score, but the Ducks had just two more hits in the game ? a single each by Beth Boskovich and Erin Goodell. Goodell has hit her stride in conference play, currently hitting .321 in the Ducks' 11 Pac-10 games and has had a hit in Oregon's last five contests. The Wildcats broke the tie with two outs in the fifth inning after a single each by Samantha Quintero and Crystal Farley followed by a walk to Lowe that loaded the bases. Champion then got her only hit of the game ? an infield RBI single that scored Quintero. Allen walked to drive in a second run and Vandergeest drove in two runs with an RBI single to left field. A throwing error on the play scored Arizona's fifth run of the inning as it took a 6-1 lead and held on to extend its road winning streak to 17 games.
