CORVALLIS ? The 15th-ranked Oregon State softball team ended its two-game losing streak to 14th-ranked Oregon Saturday, defeating the Ducks, 7-4, in front of 812 fans at the OSU Softball Complex. With the win, Oregon State improves to 34-12 overall, 2-4 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon fell to 30-10, 4-2.
"I thought we continued to try and find ways to win throughout the game," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We always know there's a chance to win until the last inning is over and I felt like we kept battling." The two teams combined for eight extra bases hits, including six doubles and two home runs. Oregon senior Julie Jaime was 2-for-2 with a double to lead the Ducks' offense while Breanne Sabol was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior pitcher Ani Nyhus (15-6) took the loss for the Ducks while Ta'Tyana McElroy improved to 11-2 with the win. Sophomore pitcher Amy Harris pitched the bulk of the game for Oregon (4.2 innings) and gave up just two hits while striking out five. Oregon State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning after a two-run home run by Kelly Peterson and a double each by Brianne McGowan and Sherina Galvan. The Ducks rallied back in the top of the second inning after Barnes doubled to score sophomores Beth Boskovich and Dani Baird. Offense continued to be a key factor for Oregon State in the bottom of the second as it extended the lead to 5-2 on an RBI single through the left side by Peterson that scored Adrienne Alo who had reached earlier on an Oregon error. The Beavers added an unearned run in the third and a solo home run by Lisa Allen in the fourth to take a 7-2 after four complete innings. Jaime doubled to lead off the fifth inning and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Breanne Sabol to pull the Ducks within 7-3. The duo combined again in the seventh as Sabol doubled to score Jaime to bring the score to 7-4.
