Nyhus No-Hits Utah State; Sets Single-Game Strikeout Record

EUGENE ? Junior Ani Nyhus pitched the 14th no-hitter in Oregon history and struck out a single-game record 16 batters to lead the Ducks to a 2-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader vs. Utah State Saturday afternoon. Utah State won the first game 5-4 in nine innings and is now 4-19 overall this season. Oregon improves to 25-8, 1-0 Pacific-10 Conference.
Nyhus threw the first no hitter at Oregon since 2002 and allowed just four batters to reach base, none advancing past second. She recorded a career-best 16 strikeouts, doubling her previous best of eight and walked just two to improve to 11-4 this season. "I got into a rhythm early and just felt good about my pitches," Nyhus said. "I have to give a lot of credit to our defense because they backed me up and I wouldn't have been able to do it without them. It's great to end the day with a win and I'm really pleased with the performance." The Ducks had five hits in the game, including a double each by freshmen Kristi Leiter, Suzie Barnes and senior Jenn Poore. Leiter finished the two games 5-for-6 with three doubles and two RBI. Freshman Kayleen Hudson hit an RBI single through the left side to score sophomore Dani Baird in the first inning. The Ducks added their second run on Poore's double that scored Leiter in the fourth. Utah State second baseman Haven Vance hit a two-run home run to right field to lead the Aggies to a 5-4 win in the first game. It was Vance's second home run of the season and Utah State's third as a team. The two teams combined for 22 hits in the first game, including a 4-for-4 performance by Leiter. Leiter had two of the Ducks' four doubles in the game and added two RBI while Hudson was 2-for-3 with a home run ? her sixth of the season ? and two runs scored. The Aggies managed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning when center fielder Casey Smith drove in catcher Candice Hatch, who led off the inning with a single. Vance then drove in Smith and Sara Fleming with a line drive through the middle. Oregon answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Leiter drove in Hudson with a single to right field. The Ducks pulled within a run after an RBI double off the right field fence by Breanne Sabol in the fifth inning. Leiter hit her second double of the game to deep right center field to drive in Poore for the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Aggies responded in the ninth and fended off Oregon's offense in the bottom of the inning.
