Softball Shows No Mercy On Kansas
03/24/04 | Softball
EUGENE ? Three home runs and a one-hitter by pitcher Amy Harris were too much for the Kansas softball team as the 19th-ranked Ducks defeated the Jayhawks 9-0 in five innings at Howe Field Wednesday morning. Oregon improved to 23-7 heading into its Pac-10 opener vs. Oregon State Friday while Kansas fell to 20-13 overall as it too enters its conference opener vs. Baylor this week.
"This was a game that we needed to get us back on track," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We really wanted to head into the Pac-10 with some confidence and I thought today we played very well both offensively and defensively and it was nice to see that." Harris threw four innings, allowing just one hit in the fourth inning while striking out seven to improve to 4-2 this season. Kansas' Serena Settlemier (0-3) took the loss. Behind three hits ? a three-run home run by Dani Baird and a two-RBI blooper by freshman Suzie Barnes ? in the first inning, Oregon took a 5-0 lead. Freshman Kayleen Hudson added a two-run home run ? her fifth home run of the season ? in the third inning to extend the Ducks' lead to 7-0. Shortstop Breanne Sabol hit Oregon's third home run of the game to score senior Jenn Poore in the fourth inning and put the Ducks' comfortably ahead 9-0. Oregon junior Ani Nyhus relieved Harris in the fifth and did not give up a hit as the Jayhawks were unable to score and the game concluded due to the eight-run mercy rule. Baird led the Ducks' offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI while Breanne Sabol was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
