Ron Finley
- Induction:
- 2017
Ron Finley’s career as head wrestling coach spanned 28 years, a tenure exceeded at Oregon by just two men – legendary track and field mentors Bill Hayward and Bill Dellinger. Finley finished his career as the wrestling program’s all-time leader in wins with 311, establishing program benchmarks for single-season victories (22, 1980-81) and dual-meet winning percentage (.923, 1989-90). His teams posted winning records in 19 of 28 seasons, including nine of his last 11 years. The two-time conference coach of the year guided Oregon to league titles in 1975, 1981 and 1982. He helped shape the careers of 22 Oregon All-Americans, 44 conference champions, and a trio of Olympians while being inducted into the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1982. A 1961 NCAA wrestling runner-up for Oregon State and a 1964 Olympian, Finley went on to coach the U.S. Greco-Roman wrestling team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The Newberg, Ore., native was honored with a lifetime achievement award for his service to the sport by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
