Ralph Spearow

Ralph Spearow was one of Bill Hayward’s best pole vaulters and all-around performers in the 1920s. As a sophomore, Spearow won the 1922 Pacific Coast Conference long jump championship with a leap of 22' 7 7/8". He also claimed the Amateur Athletic Union National pole vault title that same year with a mark of 13' 0". He won four more PCC crowns in 1923 and 1924 with high jump and pole vault titles, and earned All-American honors in 1924 for the pole vault.
He went on to compete in the 1924 Olympics in Paris, finishing sixth. Following the Olympics, the Japanese government invited Spearow to coach vaulting to the Japanese athletes.
