At Oregon, he won Pacific-8 Conference and NCAA titles in the discus in 1973 after starting his career throwing the javelin. He came from an extremely proficient athletic family, his father playing basketball for the Ducks in the 1940s. It was only after his college days were over that he began to make international headlines.
Although he qualified for three Olympic teams spanning 12 years, his greatest year was undoubtedly 1976. Apart from his Olympic gold medal, he bettered the world discus record four times and three of those came in one inspired competition, including the first-ever 70-meter throw. He won six AAU titles, added the silver medal in the Los Angeles Olympics and made the 1988 team at age 38.
