Les Tipton
- Induction:
- 1998
- Class:
- 1964
He earned points and All-America certificates as an important part of two Oregon teams which won NCAA track and field championships in 1962 and 1964. Most ardent sports followers agree, however, that Tipton’s most important contribution came as a senior in ’64. At the NCAA meet, his 249-foot, 10-inch heave for first place spurred a 1-2-3 finish in the javelin which was the catalyst, earning the Ducks the collegiate championship trophy. He stood atop the victory platform with teammates Gary Reddaway and Ron Gomez.
Les threw his career best 263’1" his senior season, a toss which stands third in all-time Webfoot annals with the spear used until recently. As a sophomore, Tipton unleashed a mighty javelin toss to capture first in a Los Angeles Coliseum meet which derailed USC’s 100+ consecutive dual-meet victories. He was awarded his first All-America honor in the ’62 NCAA meet by finishing fifth, prior to claiming his individual NCAA title in the 1964 championship year for the Ducks.
