Les Steers
- Induction:
- 1992
- Class:
- 1941
Oregon's performance in the 1941 track season is remembered as a one-man show, and that man was Les Steers. In a meet against Washington, the transfer from Stanford won the javelin, tied for first in the high hurdles and placed third in the shot put. But those were mere warm-ups to his main event; in the high jump, he leaped 6 feet, 10 inches, setting a world record. The 1941 All-American later improved that record to 6-10 1/2 in a meet in Los Angeles and then set his collegiate personal best at 6-11 at the Pacific Coast Conference-Big Ten meet. That world record that would stand for 12 years. Steers wound up winning the PCC Northern Division. NCAA and AAU high jump titles that year.
