Joaquim Cruz
- Induction:
- 1995
One of the most electrifying runners ever to wear the Oregon singlet, few collegiate athletes have had a year such as that he authored in 1984. After two NCAA titles in the middle distances, he won the 800 meters at the 1984 Olympic Games, then earned the silver medal in the ’88 Olympiad.
Coming to Eugene from his native Brazil for which he competed internationally, the lean, smooth runner was virtually unbeatable. He became the Pacific-10 Conference record owner in the 800 and 1,500-meter and mile events. He also won the Pac-10 crown in the 800 in each of his two years at Oregon.
