Gary Zimmerman
- Induction:
- 1993

- Class:
- 1984

As a soft-spoken giant in a situation that breeds anonimity, he was appreciated most by those who know the game of football best. As an offensive guard, he did his job like few others, making his teammates look better. That’s the way he actually preferred it. “There’s nothing to be gained by individualism,” he once explained. In fact, his biggest award at Oregon was a statement by his peers.
Defensive linemen in the Pacific-10 Conference voted Zimmerman the top offensive lineman in the league for his 1983 senior season. He was also selected to a pair of all-America teams and played in the Japan Bowl and Hula Bowl. He was the offensive lineman of the year in only his second NFL season with the Minnesota Vikings in 1987 and played in four Pro Bowls in his first six professional seasons.
