Jim Aiken could not only coach, he knew talent. He predicted Oregon would “win the championship and play in the Rose Bowl” before the 1948 season. The Ducks were unbeaten in league games to win a co-title and played in the Cotton Bowl
instead, boasting one of the best passing attacks in history, a defense that allowed no more than two touchdowns in any game and six players who would go on to professional careers and two who eventually would become NFL head coaches.
Six times during the season, the team was behind in a game, but came back to win five of them. Quarterback Norm Van Brocklin and end Dick Wilkins led the conference statistically and center Brad Ecklund was a unanimous all-coast selection.
The Ducks extended their winning streak to 12 in Pacific Coast Conference games and lost only at Michigan and to Southern Methodist in the Cotton Bowl.
