He could arguably be labeled the most visible runner in the school’s storied history of distance standouts. He wore his Oregon uniform the day he made his major international breakthrough. He was the champion of the 1980 New York Marathon in his first try at the distance that would become his trademark. While other athletes may have abandoned their collegiate career at that point, he continued to run for the glory of his school to express his loyalty and gratitude.
In 1978, he came within a yard of being the first to win the NCAA and AAU cross country titles in the same year, then did capture the AAU crown the next year. A three-time all-American at 10,000 meters, he was ranked as the No. 1 American after winning the 1981 TAC title. The two-time Olympian won New York twice more and the Boston Marathon near his hometown in 1982 before ever losing at the distance. He broke the American 5,000 and 10,000 records within 10 days later that summer.
